Story behind the song - Sticks & Stones
As an interracial couple my wife and I have walked through so much together. To this day we still get weird and comments and odd glances, but nothing can steal our love away.
It’s crazy to think that in America my wife and I wouldn’t have been able to legally marry until 50 years ago. In 1967 the Supreme Court made a constitutional amendment in the case of Loving V Virginia to legalize interracial marriage. America is still so young, and we still have such long way to go, but we can’t be passive. We need to continue to stand up for what is right regardless of the haters.
I want to always embrace positivity. Whenever people throw words of discouragement at me, it always “leaves a scar.” But at the same time those words are just sticks and stones. They can never truly steal who I am, my human heart, desire, and the fundamental passion to make art.
I guess I’m one of those people that if you tell me I can’t do something, I then go and make it my mission to go and prove you wrong. It’s probably not healthy, but hey, I just don’t have time for negativity in my life.
